The Coyote Ate My Homework!

Writer's picture: Stephen ComstockStephen Comstock

Sorry, that's the best excuse I could come up with for letting my blog languish for over 6 weeks since the last post! Side effect for me is having to account for 14 photo missions reaping many thousands of shots.

To make this post visually palatable, I have selected a few of my best saved images from each excursion with a grand finale of Western Grebes. The missions included the following places:

  • Point La Jolla

    • Brandt's Cormorants - Double-crested Cormorants - Peregrine Falcon - Sea Lions - Brown Pelican

  • Santee Lakes

    • Ring-necked Duck - Wood Duck

  • Ramona Grassland

    • Coyote (above) - Red-tailed Hawk - Squirrel Lookout

  • Laguna Niguel Regional Park

    • American Kestrel - White-tailed Kite

  • San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary

    • Red-tailed Hawk (face-on in-flight shot)

  • Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve

    • Kingfisher - Red-tailed Hawk - Reddish Egret - Kite pair - Sunrise

  • Lindo Lake Park

    • Black-crowned Night Heron in flight

  • Lake Hodges

    • Acorn Woodpecker - Great Blue Heron - Killdeer

  • San Diego Zoo Safari Park

    • California Condor - East African Grey-crowned Crane - Cheetah - Tiger

  • Lake Wohlford

    • Western Grebes "rushing" (display of mating behavior)

These spots are scattered about, Huntington Beach being the furthest north and San Diego on the southern end. I've enjoyed several of these locations with a friend, Adriana Greisman, who is a renowned, award-winning photographer.

So, I have structured the gallery below to show the images in the order of the sites listed above. Enjoy and please feel free to communicate your impressions.

Thanks,

Steve
